SMDC Veghel: distributing more efficiently and sustainably

On 1 June 2026, a new Slow Movers Distribution Centre (SMDC) became operational in Veghel. This distribution centre has been specifically designed for the storage and distribution of approximately 20,000 products with lower turnover rates or unpredictable demand patterns. By centralizing these products, logistics processes become simpler, more efficient, and easier to manage. The SMDC therefore represents an important link in Sligro Food Group’s distribution network across the Netherlands and Belgium.

Veghel is a logical location for this facility. Its central geographic position enables efficient supply to Sligro locations in both the Netherlands and Belgium, while allowing goods flows to be optimally combined with those of the existing Central Distribution Centre in Veghel. This centralization reduces supply chain complexity, minimizes product damage, and contributes to higher delivery reliability and service levels.

The new distribution centre adds 15,000 m² to the existing logistics campus in Veghel and provides employment for approximately 100 people. Sustainability played a key role in its development. The building is fully gas-free, equipped with LED lighting and solar panels, and heated using waste heat recovered from the refrigeration system. In addition, the refrigeration installation uses natural refrigerants, further reducing its environmental impact.

At the same time, a new data-driven picking strategy has been integrated into the SMDC. This strategy replaces legacy order-picking systems and leverages modern picking technology, newly designed picking carts, and enhanced quality control measures. As a result, orders are picked more efficiently, error rates are reduced, and productivity is improved. The new operating model contributes to higher customer and employee satisfaction while supporting the continued digitalization of the supply chain.

With the SMDC, Sligro Food Group is investing in a future-proof logistics network that is not only more efficient and sustainable, but also better aligned with the growing customer expectations regarding product availability, reliability, and service.
